July in the garden is time for observation, organising and planning for the season ahead.
If you haven’t already done so divide your rhubarb crowns, refresh strawberries by cutting
right back and removing runners, prune your berries by removing dead wood and cutting
canes which fruited last year back to a node about 30am above the ground.
Do an inventory of your stakes and trellises – repair any which require it and order more
stakes if you are short.
Also do a seed inventory – it’s much easier to order or buy seed ahead of tie than get caught up in the rush.
Organise your seed into either date to sow or season to sow.
If you plan to grow lots of veg from seed set yourself up a seed raising area which is vermin
proof, protected and gets plenty of indirect light. You might even consider a heated pad to
get your seed started early!
Sow seed for salads, rocket, mizuna, parsley and radish direct – even with the cold soil they
will be up and going in 10 days and harvesting in 8 – 10 weeks.
Sow larger seed like peas (which may rot in the cold ground) into trays and transplant when
10cm high. Cover empty beds with a thick layer of organic matter to protect the soil life –
you can simply rake the mulch aside, or clear furrows to plant into when you are ready.
Write your planting plan down for the year. If this seems daunting ABC gardening Australia
has a really easy to use planting guide – try it!
If you want to go the next step and really develop your plan consider joining us for the next
home vegetable growing series at SAGE starting Saturday 6th September.
The SAGE committee and its various sub committees and working groups have been actively growing SAGE for 16 years. Many SAGE members have stepped up and contributed over the years and with the AGM due on 20 September, you might like to consider if it’s time for you to ‘take a turn’. Nicole Mensinga, SAGE member and Acupuncturist at Healing Hands Moruya offers some warming tips to support your body, mind, and garden this winter season.
It’s a crisp, sunny Wednesday morning, and a small group of volunteers are happily greeting each other at the SAGE Garden in Moruya. Over the next few hours, these volunteers will plant, weed and harvest the fresh produce, and deliver it free to local organisations that help people in need.
