A farmers market doesn’t create a local food system. A local food system creates a farmers market.

 

Monday evenings are when the annual Delicious Magazine Produce Awards are held, and this year they were in Melbourne. That’s all fine, except if you are a finalist in the “Outstanding Farmers Market” category and your market is on Tuesday afternoon and you’re on a 7am flight in the morning.

This is Fraser of Old Mill Road BioFarm during the market’s “Hungry Gap” of spring 2013, but the gap in 2018 has started in July, thanks to drought and a perfect storm of other circumstances.
