Thursday 6 March 2025 | 3.30 - 5.30pm
SAGE Garden 110 Queen Street, Moruya
With Sandra Makdessi - SAGE Food Educator and Caterer.
We thought we'd start off the after school hub with some cooking. Wild foraging was something the youths had identified that they were interested in. What better foraged food than the abundant warrigal - which is found in many areas in the Eurobodalla.
And who doesn't like a veggie roll - we harvested some wild warrigal greens.
We had one youth show up and we started with knife skills, chopping onions, plucking and washing the warrigal greens, mixing it up other veg and lentils and rolling the yummy filling in puff pastry! We prepared the BBQ to bake them.
Michael from ESC Youth Development team was also present, engaging and supervising the process.
Although we only had one youth and a whole lot of veggie rolls, we all had a good time, preparing food as we all got to know each other a little better.
The next day, I received a message from the youths mother. It read "Hi Sandra, thanks for having a Buds session with my son. He enjoyed making the rolls. He was quite proud of himself for chopping all the onions and bringing food back to our family. It will be great to see this event grow over time as it is so important for young people to be involved in SAGE. (I'm putting the word out) Even though we are a growing/ cooking family, it is great for our son to have this experience out in community. I can immediately see the impact it is having in his self confidence. Thanks again. Have a beautiful weekend."
After school snack: Corn chips, Roasted local carrot hummus, local watermelon, finished with tasting the warrigal greens veggie and lentil rolls with homemade local tomato sauce
